<lead><![CDATA[Olympic gold medallist Christine Nesbitt feels lucky to only have a fractured elbow after a sport utility vehicle struck her bike while she was riding in Calgary. The long-track speedskater had just completed a weightlifting session at the University of Calgary's Olympic Oval last Friday when she was hit while crossing a busy intersection.]]></lead>
<text><![CDATA[“I feel lucky because I know it could have been a lot worse,” Nesbitt said Wednesday. “Even though I think I'm a safe cyclist and really aware of what's happening, bad things can happen and it could have been a lot worse.“I only injured my arm and it could have been my leg, I could have had a concussion or broke other part of my body.”Nesbitt, 25, won gold in the 1,000 metres at the Vancouver Games. She was about to get back on the ice again, but doesn't expect to skate for up to a month while her elbow heals.“I can't skate because if I fall, it would be super painful and because of the risk of making it worse,” she said.Nesbitt says the driver of the SUV stopped immediately and called an ambulance. The police came to investigate, but Nesbitt says she hasn't spoken to them and doesn't know if charges were laid.“It was genuinely an accident,” she said. “I believe that he didn't see me. It was just bad luck.”Nesbitt says the driver didn't know she was an Olympic champion, but the paramedics and staff at the Foothills Hospital did, so she received quick and thorough care. Her injuries were double- and triple-checked.She's not wearing a cast, but has her arm wrapped and in a sling. Nesbitt has taken a week off of training to rest and plans to start riding a stationary bike and doing lower-body weights next week.“As much as I want to be training and keep building my base, it's better than it happening in August or September or October,” she said.Nesbitt was born in Melbourne, Australia and grew up in London, Ont. Calgary is her training base and she lives near the university. While that particular intersection has always made her nervous, she can't avoid it to get home. She prefers biking to walking because it reduces her travel time by 20 minutes and helps her warm up for training.Nesbitt owns a car, but says driving such a short distance would be “ridiculous.”“I'm just going to have to be extra cautious at that intersection,” she said.Nesbitt wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.“That's something I'm definitely going to reconsider now,” she said. “I always wear a helmet when I'm training and cycling on roads. I'm not normally on the roads when I cycle to training.”Nesbitt's coach Marcel Lacroix retired after the Olympics. Nesbitt is currently working with Xiuli Wang, who coached Olympic champion Clara Hughes. While she has thought about training in The Netherlands because her boyfriend Simon Kuipers is on the Dutch national team, Nesbitt also likes her situation at the Oval.“I'd like to go and train there even for a training camp and see how it goes,” Nesbitt said. “As much as I may want to, it's always best to be in Canada if I'm going to represent Canada.“I've been really happy with how things are working out with Julie. Now that I've taken the time to look into everything and make sure everything is good around me, we still have a lot of good people working for our team.”]]></text>
